Better monster senses + stealth


This update makes a bunch of changes to how Fen detects its prey.

Vision is no longer a binary yes/no affair. Instead, Fen tracks how aware it is of each prey separately. Awareness goes up when it can see at least part of their body – the more it can see, the better. It rises slower when prey is in Fen’s peripheral vision, but there’s a bonus if the prey is moving perpendicularly – think about how you can notice motion out of the corner of your eye.

Hearing is still mostly binary, but it generates faint/weak/strong thoughts, rather than just strong ones. It also uses inverse-square falloff instead of just setting an arbitrary max range based on intensity.

The more alerted Fen is, the sharper its senses get. This makes it [very hard to run]https://twitter.com/causticcrux/status/1590023624530235393) once you get its attention. In the future, there will be hiding places to conceal yourself with, which should make this a little easier. Otherwise, uh…don’t get caught (:

Note that there’s no correlation between the sound volume you hear and the noise events that are being sent. The calculations are completley separate. I’ll need to figure out a good way to do that!

Faint and weak thoughts get forgotten about more easily, and have much longer delays before they’re acted upon.

Since I probably don’t have the numbers set correctly, I added debug options to control Fen’s sight and hearing. 100% is the default. 300% vision means it sees three times as far; 300% hearing means it picks up on sounds that are three times as quiet (which is less than hearing three times as far).

Also, you can now lean by hitting Q/E, and sneak by holding Control. Leaning doesn’t move your body at all, internally, so you’ll be a lot harder to notice. Although, since you are still stuck in a T-pose, you’ll have a single hand poking out…

Fen’s footsteps now scale in volume with how fast it’s moving. It should be a little harder to hear coming now (especially in that latex form, which is now nearly-silent). The latex form also ducks throguh hallways faster, because why not?

Misc bugfixes:

  • Non-player-controlled prey can now be heard by Fen (they weren’t playing footstep events)
  • Fixed a short, loud noise when loading a level
  • The debug UI can now be scaled up and down. It defaults to the small size
  • The entire debug menu can be hidden to save some screen space
  • You no longer get hypnotized by Fen digesting someone if it isn’t in its latex form
