Experimental build: Fen sees your flashlight, more menu work, scent tracking
I’ve been spending a bunch of time setting this thing up on Steam! It’s going to be a long time until the game releases, so don’t hold your breath. This does make it easier for me to test on my Steam Deck, for sure…
Scent tracking
Fen can now find you via smell. To make this fair, it only works at long range – I’m taking 50 meters or more. So, this is only relevant on very large maps, like the Campsite.
This should keep Fen reasonably close to you at all times. It’s a very faint, inaccurate sense.
Menu work
I added a little content-warning splash screen at the start. It plays for 6 seconds on first launch, then only 2 seconds afterwards. I figured that’d be a nice compromise between “you can read the damn thing” and “it doesn’t get in the way”.
Flashlight
Fen now notices your flashlight. At the moment, it only sees when it’s being shone on its head, but I do plan to make it notice when a flashlight is shining on a nearby wall, too. This gets you detected very quickly from very far away, so…be careful!
greb
I’m working on extracting some of Fen’s actions into their own little components. The first one I did was grabbing. I haven’t tested this very thoroughly, so things might break…
This change should make it a lot easier to add new actions. The old system is just one enormous blob of C# (2,500 lines, right now!).
Incidentally, I re-added the lunge-grab move. Fen is more likely to just grab you normally. In the future, I’ll probably keep track of how aggressive Fen is feeling, and then use that to decide which move is more likely.
Found Footage
The “found footage” camera can now rotate up and down. I also reduced the amount of rotation it inherits from your body. This should make it a little more usable.
